Vertical Tabs
So it turns out Firefox and Chrome both support vertical tabs now.
I first tried using vertical tabs back when Arc Browser was popular—and hadn’t yet experienced the massive vulnerability that probably(?) contributed to its discontinuation back in 2025—and I really liked them. I was a bit sad to have to go back to horizontal tabs at the top of screen and tried extensions like Tree Style Tabs and Sideberry to replicate the effect, but having to rely on an extension and manually styling my userChrome.css to get Firefox to look how I wanted was a pain, so I relented and went back to horizontal tabs.
Anyway, I don’t have to do that anymore. I’m back to vertical tabs on both my work and my personal computers. I think both browsers have implemented it quite well, although I’d definitely love to see native tree-style tabs for even more organisation. The best part is being able to collapse the tabs down to just their favicon, which gives me soo much more screen space.
But the point of me writing this anyway was to say that I’ve noticed I now keep more tabs open than I did when I was using horizontal tabs. Maybe it’s because it’s easier to scroll through a verical list than a horizontal one? I’m able to see the titles of more tabs than before, so perhaps that plays a factor in how much “context” I’m happy to have open at any one time.
